The Rothler Lacquer Dining Chair from Four Hands is a side chair built on contrast, with a different texture on every surface. A solid beech frame in glossy onyx lacquer holds a cushioned seat in brushed, speckled charcoal upholstery, and the low back is woven from double-twisted black paper cord. Webbing supports the foam-and-fiber seat pad, and the frame is joined with mortise and tenon. Woven cord varies a little from chair to chair, which is part of how it looks.
It comes from the Four Hands 30th Anniversary Capsule, a study in mixed materials that stays inside a single dark palette. The lacquer reads sleek, the cord reads matte and tactile, and the flecked seat sits between the two. Set against pale oak, travertine, or a white plaster wall, the black frame draws a clean line. Against a lacquered or glass table, it adds grain and weave.
Armless and open at the back, it slides easily under a dining table and is easy to move between rooms. Use a set around the table, pull a single chair up to a desk or vanity, or park one in an entry as occasional seating. The seat cushion is firm enough for a long dinner, and the plastic glides on the feet protect wood floors.
