Holiday

Holiday decor at High St. leans toward the ornament people stop and look at twice. Some are glass, some are gold, and a good number are shaped like things that have no business on a tree.

On the shelf now: Cody Foster's ornaments shaped like a champagne tower, a Dutch oven, a canned ham, a tin of caviar and a jackalope with gold-leaf antlers. HomArt's feather trees come in gold and green luster, Winward Silks makes beaded trees and bubblegum glass balls, and Zodax adds a white Santa Claus and a silver owl in glass.

A tree should look like the people who live with it, not like a catalog.

For the rest of the house, look through housewares.

How to Decorate With Holiday Ornaments

Start with a color, then add the oddities. A tree with a clear palette can take a lot of strange ornaments before it looks busy.

Pick a Base, Then Break It

Choose two or three colors for the base layer, like Winward Silks' bubblegum glass balls in fuchsia or citrus, which come in 100, 120 and 150-millimeter sizes. Hang the largest deep in the branches and the smaller ones near the tips. Then add the ornaments people will talk about, like Cody Foster's champagne tower, the Rack o' Ribs or the NYC deli cup, at eye level where guests will find them.

The ornament we see picked up most on the floor is the one shaped like food. Nobody can walk past a canned ham.

Trees Beyond the Tree

Not every room needs a full tree. HomArt's feather trees come in small, medium and large, in gold or green luster, and HomArt suggests them for a mantel or a tablescape. Winward Silks' beaded trees come in 24 and 28-inch heights. Cody Foster's Les Fleures candelabra in gold and its glass cloche dress a table, and the winter deer globe sits on a shelf on its own. Our guide to entryway decor covers the table by the door.

Holiday Gifts and Stocking Stuffers

An ornament is one of the easiest gifts to give, because it comes out every year.

  • For the host: a Cody Foster champagne tower or tin of caviar ornament, given with a bottle.
  • For the cook: the Dutch oven, the market pig or the butter ornament.
  • For the outdoors type: the vintage fishing reel, the tackle box or the golf bag.
  • For a new home: a HomArt feather tree for the mantel.
  • Stocking stuffers: most ornaments here fit in gifts under $50.

Every purchase leaves in High St. branded tissue and a premium bag with cord handles and a gold-foil logo.

FAQ

Holiday Decor: FAQs

If you have a question that isn't here, just ask.

What holiday decor does High St. carry?

Glass ornaments and baubles, ornaments shaped like everyday objects, feather trees and beaded trees, and tabletop pieces like a gold candelabra and glass cloches. Online that means Cody Foster, HomArt, Winward Silks and Zodax.

Do you have funny Christmas ornaments?

Yes, plenty. Cody Foster makes ornaments shaped like a canned ham, a roll of cash, a tin of caviar, a Dutch oven and a Rack o' Ribs, among others. Some are cheekier than that, so ask on the floor.

What size ornaments should I use on a tree?

Mix at least two sizes. Put the largest, like a 150-millimeter glass ball, deep in the branches and the smaller ones near the tips, then hang the novelty ornaments at eye level.

What's a good holiday gift under $50?

An ornament, because it comes out every year. Most of Cody Foster's ornaments and HomArt's small feather trees come in well under $50, and every purchase leaves in High St. branded tissue and a premium bag with cord handles and a gold-foil logo.
