Amulet Vial Regular Peruian

Peruvian Amulet Vial

A small glass vial packed with a layered collage of good luck charms from the Andean folk tradition. Inside, a miniature saint figure sits beside a Huayruru seed, the red-and-black Amazon basin seed long used in folk ritual, and bits of iron pyrite, the mineral known as fool's gold. The glass is clear, so each layer shows, and the arrangement shifts a little from one vial to the next.

The form belongs to a long line of portable protective objects, kin to milagros, huacas, and the mesa altars found across Andean spiritual practice. It reads as talisman and folk object at once. It sits easily alongside curiosity-cabinet finds, ethnographic textiles, or botanical specimens.

Compact enough to carry in a pocket or hang from a cord, it works as a personal amulet. On a shelf, a desk, or a small altar, it holds a corner of its own. It also makes an easy gift for someone beginning something new.

FAQ

Oddities and Curiosities in Cincinnati: Questions We Get Asked on the Floor

If you have a question that isn't here, just ask. That's what we're here for.

What are oddities and curiosities?

Oddities and curiosities are natural history pieces and unusual objects collected for display, in the tradition of the old cabinet of curiosities. Ours include real insect specimens in resin and glass, skulls and bones, taxidermy, fossils and folk charms.

Are the insects real?

Yes. Realbug preserves genuine specimens in clear cast resin, and Green Beetle seals real insects in glass globes. Every insect we carry is ethically sourced. Because every specimen is an individual, size and color vary a little from piece to piece.

Are the skulls and bones real?

Some are real and some are cast. Contrast's kudu skull is cast in resin, and its monkey skull is a cast piece finished to read as aged bone. Every real bone we carry is ethically sourced, so ask on the floor which is which.

What's a good curiosity gift for someone who has everything?

A Realbug resin paperweight or a Green Beetle globe works on any desk or shelf. For a smaller gift, the Peruvian amulet vial holds a miniature saint, a Huayruru seed and iron pyrite in one small glass vial.

What's the difference between curiosities and housewares?

Curiosities are the natural history pieces and unusual objects, like specimens, skulls, fossils and folk charms. Housewares covers the rest of the home, from serveware and candles to planters and decorative objects. If someone will ask what it is, it lives in curiosities.

How big is the kudu skull?

Contrast's kudu skull stands 28 inches tall on its double-step glass base, cast in resin with spiral horns and real anatomical detail. It needs a console, a mantel or a deep shelf with room above it.

Do you sell taxidermy?

Yes. Taxidermy is part of this collection, with more pieces arriving, and every piece is ethically sourced. Call 513.723.1901 to ask what's on the floor right now.

Where can I buy oddities and curiosities in Cincinnati?

High St., a 17,000-square-foot lifestyle store at 1401 Reading Rd in Over-the-Rhine, carries oddities and curiosities alongside housewares, books and furniture. We're open every day but Tuesday, 10am to 6pm, with Sunday hours of 11am to 4pm. In-stock online orders are usually ready for pickup in about two hours, and shipping is free over $150.
