Stationery

Stationery is the part of the gift people keep. A good card outlasts the candle it came with, and a good sheet of paper makes a small gift look considered.

On the shelf now: Alexa Pulitzer's hand-drawn notes, designed and printed in New Orleans, Chez Gagné's letterpress cards from a vintage press in California, Red Cap Cards' wrapping paper and greeting cards, Giftsland's handmade silkscreen sheets from Kathmandu, and Hester & Cook's notebooks with artist Elizabeth Foster.

We'd rather sell you one card that's actually funny than a box of ones that aren't.

The books to go with them live in books and stationery.

How to Choose Stationery

Buy the card for the person, not the occasion, and buy the wrap for the gift, not the season.

Cards and Notes

Alexa Pulitzer's Royal French Bulldog notes come 10 to a pack, flat A6 cards with envelopes, printed with soy-based ink on USA-made ecru laid stock. Chez Gagné prints its cards on a vintage letterpress in California and leaves them blank inside. Red Cap Cards, Blue Barnhouse, Guttersnipe Press and The Mincing Mockingbird cover birthdays and thank-yous, and a few cards you'd only send to a close friend.

The card question we get most is what to write. Three sentences, signed the way you'd sign a text. Write it before you wrap the gift, and if the card is funny, let the gift be sincere.

Wrapping Paper and Gift Bags

Red Cap Cards' Wild Kingdom, Woodland Mushrooms and Otomi papers sit beside Giftsland's handmade 20 by 30-inch silkscreen sheets, made with small cottage industries and women's cooperatives in Kathmandu. Red Cap Cards' neon pink tissue and The Twentieth's Cheers Darling Art Deco wine bag finish the job. We don't offer traditional gift wrap, which is why the paper is here. Wrap a book in a patterned sheet and tie it with ribbon, and nobody asks where you bought the gift bag.

Notebooks and the Desk

The desk side of the shelf is small and useful.

  • Notebooks: Hester & Cook's Take Note, Tiger, 40 ruled pages with red stitched binding, 6 by 9.25 inches.
  • Letter openers: Madison Bay's 9-inch antiqued brass fish.
  • Clips: HomArt's Bookkeepers clip stand on a cast iron base.
  • Pens and bookmarks: Kikkerland's 7-in-1 gadget pen and magnetic cat paw bookmarks.
  • Seals: our paper plane vinyl envelope seals, 8 to a pack.
