A cylinder-shaped side table from Four Hands, built in black oak and black faux shagreen. The drum body sits on a recessed plinth base, so the table appears to hover a little above the floor. It is sized as a true side table, tall enough to sit beside a sofa arm and sturdy enough to hold a lamp, a stack of books and a drink at once.
The Crosby suite was designed in collaboration with Los Angeles furniture designer Thomas Bina, whose partnership with Four Hands goes back to the early 2000s. This piece comes from the brand's 30th Anniversary Capsule and keeps to one simple shape. The black oak reads dark and grainy, while the shagreen has a pebbled, leathery surface that catches light differently from the wood. It sits comfortably with velvet, boucle, brass and lacquered pieces, and it holds its own in a room with strong color or pattern.
Place it beside a lounge chair, at the end of a sofa, or next to a bed as a nightstand with some weight to it. The round top has no corners to catch on, which suits tight seating arrangements and narrow walkways. Wipe it clean with a dry cloth and set a coaster under anything wet.
