Hughes Gateleg Console Table

A gateleg console in walnut from Four Hands, built to sit narrow against a wall and open into a full table when the day calls for it. The top and frame pair walnut veneer with solid walnut, edge-banded and put together in frame-and-panel construction, with a burl-figured face that gives the wood a rich, warm cast. Two butterfly leaves store within the table itself and swing out on hinged supports, so nothing needs to be kept in a closet.

The design draws on French antique gateleg and drop-leaf tables, the kind that earned their keep in small rooms by changing roles through the day. Four Hands made it for its anniversary capsule, and the slim legs, squared top and clean lines keep the reference light. The deep walnut tone sits comfortably beside brass, aged leather, painted plaster walls and a stack of well-used books.

Leave it closed in an entry or behind a sofa for lamps, a tray and a bowl for keys. Open one leaf for a writing desk, or raise both for a dining table that seats a small dinner. Leg levelers under the feet help it settle on uneven floors.
