A round-topped side table from Four Hands, built from solid pine and pine veneer and finished in a worn, softened black. The top overhangs a slim leg base, and a fixed shelf sits below it for a book or a stack of coasters. Leg levelers on the feet keep it steady on uneven floors, and the frame is sturdy enough to take a seated guest in a pinch.
The finish is applied by hand and then distressed, so the black thins at the edges and lets the pine grain show through. Graining and wear differ from one table to the next. The proportions follow the old cricket table, a small, low occasional table of the kind used as a stool, a drink stand or a footrest, and the antique feel pairs with painted woods, brass, linen and aged leather.
Set it beside a sofa or an armchair, at the end of a bed, or in an entry where it can hold keys and a lamp. It also works as extra seating when a room fills up. Pull it out for a drink, push it back when you are done.
