A console table from Four Hands cut from solid Calacatta Viola marble, with a thick slab top that cantilevers over a base set at the slightest angle. The top reads as a single block of stone, and two narrow slab legs hold it up without any apron, stretcher or drawer to interrupt the line. Marble is a natural material, so the veining, tone and density of the pattern will differ from one table to the next.
The Matthes suite comes from the Four Hands 30th Anniversary Capsule, and this version keeps the form quiet so the stone carries the design. Calacatta Viola has a pale ground crossed by veining that leans toward violet and warm gray, which gives the surface more movement than a plain white marble. It sits comfortably in a modern room and holds its own against traditional pieces, with brass, glazed ceramics or dark wood nearby.
The depth is shallow, which suits an entry wall, a hallway or the back of a sofa. Set a lamp, a stack of books and a tray for keys on top, or style it with a tall vase and a framed mirror above. The stone is heavy by nature, so choose its spot with the long term in mind.
