A pedestal dining table from Four Hands, built from solid marble with an oval top and a single sculpted base. The base is cut with vertical scallops that give the stone a ribbed, almost fluted texture, set against a smooth polished surface above. It is natural marble, so veining and tone vary from table to table, and the top is sealed for daily use. It is also a very heavy piece, so it helps to decide where it will live before it arrives.
The design borrows from Italian stone furniture, the kind of columnar marble base you might find under a café table in Milan or Rome. Here the proportions are scaled up for a full dining room, and the carved base gives the table a sculptural presence even with nothing on it. It sits well with rattan or upholstered chairs, warm wood, brass, and rooms that already have pattern, color, and art competing for attention.
Because the table rests on a central base instead of corner legs, chairs can pull in anywhere around the oval, and the table seats six comfortably. Use it for weeknight dinners, long Sunday tables, or as a gathering table in a large kitchen or open living room. Marble is porous even when sealed, so coasters and a soft cloth for blotting spills will keep the top looking its best.
