The Sumner Outdoor Bench from Four Hands is a long, low, backless seat built around a frame of solid FSC-certified teak. The frame is joined with mortise and tenon and finished in a washed brown that lets the grain show. The seat is woven from white polypropylene rope, which holds its color and shape outdoors, and leg levelers keep it steady on uneven pavers or decking.
The lines are clean and angular, with an oval seat that softens the edges a little. The pale rope against the warm, slightly weathered teak gives the bench a quiet two-tone look. It sits comfortably beside woven or rattan chairs, painted planters, and stone surfaces, and it reads as modern without looking stiff. Teak will continue to age with exposure, and the grain and tone vary from piece to piece.
Set it at the end of a patio table, along a garden wall, or under a pergola where two people can sit side by side. It also works as a bench on a covered porch for pulling on boots or setting down a tray of drinks. Cover it or bring it indoors in bad weather and when it is not in use.
