Western Hercules Beetle Globe

A Western Hercules beetle preserved whole inside a glass globe and sealed with a natural cork, so the specimen can be turned and studied from every side. The beetle is hand posed, and the horns that give the species its name read clearly through the curved glass. Each insect varies slightly in size and color, and the globe is chosen to fit the individual specimen, so no two arrive exactly alike.

The piece borrows from the cabinet of curiosities and the natural history collections of the nineteenth century, when insects were pinned, labeled, and kept under glass for close looking. The shell runs through olive, tan, and near-black tones, which sit well against dark wood, aged brass, and shelves full of old books. One globe holds its own as a single object, and several together start to look like a small collection.

Set it on a desk, a mantel, a bookshelf, or a side table where it can be picked up and looked at. The glass is not UV protected, so a spot out of direct sun will keep the specimen in good shape for years.
